'Maltese Falcon' close reaching as she enters Saint Tropez Bay, October 2006. Designed by Ken Freivokh, the Falcon is the largest privately-owned sailing yacht in the world at 88 metres. This modern sailing clipper is owned by Tom Perkins. ^^^The fifteen square sails are controlled using 75 electric furling winches mounted aloft. The yacht was built under control of the Italian superyacht specialist Perini Navi in a Turkish shipyard. Designed, developed and fabricated by Insensys (Hamble, Southampton, U.K.), the carbon/epoxy masts and spars are strong and stiff enough to stand upright with no stays or supporting wires. Each 26-tons mast is 58 metres high and fitted with six curved carbon fiber yard arms, the horizontal structures that support the self-furling sails. Based on the DynaRig square rig concept, each mast carries five separate pushbutton-controlled, internally furled square sails engineered by Doyle Sailmakers. Because the masts are free standing, they can be rotated to suit the wind direction. To maximize speed, the sails are trimmed to the wind by rotating the mast – thus making the boat much more aerodynamically efficient. The rotating mast concept was first conceived in the 1960s by German hydraulics engineer Wilhelm Prolls, but only became feasible later on with the advent of new composites, such as carbon fiber. The concept was called the DynaRig. Insensys' vice president of engineering Damon Roberts took a team of Hamble-based engineers to Turkey to set up the mast manufacturing facility. He added around 30 locally based workers, resulting in a workforce which could handle every aspect of the project from the design, manufacture, as well as the crucial job of stepping the masts using two 500-ton cranes. The yacht costed in the region of $100 million (USD).

'Musketeers" giving homage to the new 'Capitaine de Ville' (armed with his lance) and his 'Major'. Second day of the St Tropez Bravade 1994, near the Coven Chapel, St Tropez, France.^^^The 'Capitaine' is Jean-Baptiste Meyffren, 72 years-old. It is very late in the night but the celebrations are far to be finished. The ‘Grande Bravade’ is the second day of this oldest European event. It is also the longest day, having seen since the early morning long processions of all the ‘Bravadeurs’ across the old harbour streets, with the obsessing music of the fifes and drums and the noisy ‘tromblonades’ caused by the innofensive but smoky gunfire of the ‘Musketeers’. The unceasing gunfire provides rhythm during the two first days of the Bravade and are one of its spectacular highlights. Nearly 400 kilos of powder are used, which represent nearly 40,000 gun shots! Jean Dhenry (to the right), 86 years-old in 2006, is the Capitaine of the 100 cadets of the French Navy, dressed in modern uniforms. They are part of the 'Corps de Bravade' including three groups of soldiers dressed differently. In the old times, St. Tropez was often then under attacks from the Barbaresques. The first 'Capitaine de Ville' was named on 24 June 1558. His duties were 'to protect the city day and night, take with him the necesseray men to defend the city, install the guns in the right places and buy powder for the guns'. He was often chosen among men directing ships trading. Hence the presence of the French Navy in the Bravade. The St.Tropez Bravade is a 500 year-old celebration of the time when the harbour was a free city, independent from the French kingdom. Both a religious and a military celebration, the Bravade is one of the oldest traditions in Provence.
