Cava D'Ispica (Ispica caves), Siracusa, Sicily. Situated between the towns of Ispica and Modica, this great fissure is about 13km Iong. It is stacked with abandoned troglodyte dwellings, small sanctuaries and necropolises. The hollows studding the walls of the gorge are a natural phenomen in karst rock, they were then modified by humans to create homes.

Interior of Monreale Cathedral (officially Santa Maria la Nuova), Sicily, formed from a fusion of artistic styles. ^^^The Normans conquered Sicily from about 1061 to 1091. This cathedral was built at the order of William II. Like the mixture of cultures in Sicily itself, this church, sometimes called "Sicilian Romanesque," also reflects varied influences: Norman (the style of the most recent conqueror), Byzantine and Islamic. While the front of the church is more restrained with two towers and an arched portico, the three apses at the end of the Latin-cross plan are a riot of design. Pointed arches from the Islamic tradition, Norman interlaced pointed arches in patterns, and Byzantine polychrome mosaic designs decorate the surfaces. The interior walls of the Cathedral are totally decorated with mosaics.

Colosseum, Rome. The Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheater was begun by Vespasian, inaugurated by Titus in 80 AD and completed by Domitian. ^^^Located on marshy land between the Esquiline and Caelian Hills, it was the first permanent amphitheater to be built in Rome. Its monumental size and grandeur as well as its practical and efficient organization for producing spectacles and controlling the large crowds make it one of the great architectural monuments achieved by the ancient Romans. The Colosseum was designed to hold 50,000 spectators, and it had approximately eighty entrances so crowds could arrive and leave easily and quickly.
