Tony Bullimore helming 18.28m trimaran "Apricot", during the Round the Europe Race 1985, off Spain. ^^^Designed by Bristol-based Nigel Irens for Tony Bullimore (also based in Bristol), the pair won the 1985 Round the British Isles. In 1986, on the first night of the French singlehanded transatlantic Rum Race, a rogue wave snapped off the port float bow. With no charts, Bullimore diverted to stop in Brest, where he arrived on the next night with 40 knots winds. In Paris, the French race committee (UNCL) had promised him to send a motor boat off the Brest entrance to tow him. Strangely, the race committee forgot to check with the harbour master if the motor boat was really gone at sea in a crucial moment for the disabled yacht. The Brest harbour master testified later he had never been requested to give assistance. Apricot, pushed by the big swell, broke on the dark cliffs. Tony climbed the step stone wall in the night, with the horrible vision of his yacht dismantled under his feet.

She was sold to American owners in 1898 and renamed the "Star of India" in 1906. By 1923 steam power had replaced sails on merchant ships and the Star of India was laid up in Oakland. A group of San Diegans purchased the ship and had her towed to San Diego in 1927. Depression and war delayed the beginning of her restoration until the late 1950s. In 1976, with her restoration complete, she sailed on San Diego bay for the first time in 50 years. The Star of India is now the pride of the Maritime Museum of San Diego's fleet of historic ships.
