Despite being near the shipping lanes north of Roscoff he escaped collision from a ship, but instead was hit by fellow competitor Jean le Cam in "Bonduelle" during the night, causing damage to the starboard bow. Cammas and Francis Joyon both capsized in gusts during moderate conditions, the weather then deteriorated further and out of 18 multihulls, only 3 finished the race, 4 capsized, many had structural problems, one never left port and one skipper gave up solo sailing for good.
