Trimaran "Gautier II" during the 1981 Twostar transatlantic race, heaving-to in heavy seas in the north Atlantic ^^^with no rudder... Jean Yves Terlain and Christian Fevrier were in 3rd position of the 103 starters. The experimental mainsail broke in a squall, four days after the start. They swapped their mainsail with the genoa, but two days later, the rudder shaft broke. Gautier waited a week in bad weather for a Canadian container-ship leaving Le Havre with a new rudder and a spare mainsail. They finally arrived in Newport 27 days after the start.

Stern of steel clipper ship 'The Star of India', the world's oldest ^^^active and fully rigged ship. She was built at Ramsey shipyard on the Isle of Man and launched as the "Euterpe" in 1863. She began her working life as a cargo ship in the India trade and was nearly lost on her first two voyages surviving a mutiny, collision, cyclone and the death of her captain. In 1871 she embarked on a quarter century of hauling emigrants to New Zealand. She circumnavigated the globe 21 times during this service.

Catamaran "Enza New Zealand", 60 miles from Ushant Island, France on 1st April 1994, during the Jules Verne Trophy. The wind is still blowing at 45 knots, and Enza is under storm jib only, ^^^towing the coiled chain behind to avoid pitchpoling in the steep running waves. Skippered by Sir Peter Blake and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the Kiwi boat established a new Jules Verne Trophy record during this second attempt - 74 days 22 hours 17 minutes and 22 seconds.
