Eric Tabarly's mother in Newport, Rhode Island, for the arrival of her son, winner of the 1976 Singlehanded Transatlantic Race. ^^^The Tabarly name doesn't come not from Brittany, but from the south-west of France. More precisely from the Tarn et Garonne department, where all families could be located there before 1871, and only there. At this time, and according a national survey, there was not a single Tabarly living in Brittany. Eric's great-grandfather left the south of France around the late 1800s to establish in the Nantes area. More interesting, Daniel Charles, the French yachting historian, after years of careful research, thinks the name comes from a British warrior named Tabarly, who came with the Black Prince from England in 1365 to raid the Aquitaine province. He liked the country very much and decided to stay there. There is some irony in the fact that the French sailing legend, who has been often penalized by the British sailing rules, had probably a British ancestor!

In 1946, a buyer came home. Then 15 years old, and defying his father, Eric said to him : 'Don't buy the boat. She is a wreck!'. Guy Tabarly gave a trashing to Eric, but finally gave him the yacht. A gaff-rigged cutter, Pen Duick was designed by William Fife Jnr in 1898 and built at Gridiron & Workers, in Carrigaloe, nearby Crosshaven, Ireland. Yum was her first name given by her owner, Adolphus Fowler, a member of the Royal Cork Yacht Club. Her racing career begun at Cowes in 1889, as a 20-Rater. Andre Hachette, a French yachtman bought her in 1902. She had then 12 different owners and new names until Jean Lebec acquired her in 1935 and named her Pen Duick. Guy Tabarly, the Eric's father bought the yacht in 1938 and didn't changed the name. Eric grew on the yacht, during the familial cruises and loved her a lot. But her father wanted to sell the boat. In 1946, a buyer came at home. Eric, then 15 year-old, and defying his father, said to him : 'Don't buy the boat. She is a wreck !'. Guy Tabarly gave a trashing to Eric, but finally, gave him the yacht. In 1952, Eric Tabarly spent months at the Gilles and Marc Constantini boatyard in La Trinite to mold a plastic hull on the totally rotten yacht. That was the only solution to save the beautiful Fife's lines. Pen Duick was seen often racing in the Solent, around the Fastnet or in Santander. After 1962, Eric Tabarly had little time to care the yacht which was abandonned during 20 years. Raymond Labbe, a well known boat-builder in St.Malo, accepted to rebuild the totally wrecked Pen Duick in 1983. Six years later, Pen Duick was launched again and Eric Tabarly sailed her until his sad lost in the Irish Sea on June 13, 1998. He had made a donation to his daughter Marie before and she is now the skipper. Pen Duick is 15,10 m long with a beam of 2,93 m with a 10 ton displacement.
