Figurehead of 'The Star of India', the world's oldest active and fully rigged ship. The steel clipper ship was built at Ramsey shipyard and launched as the "Euterpe" in 1863. ^^^She began her working life as a cargo ship in the India trade and was nearly lost on her first two voyages surviving a mutiny, collision, cyclone and the death of her captain. In 1871 she embarked on a quarter century of hauling emigrants to New Zealand. She circumnavigated the globe 21 times during this service. She was sold to American owners in 1898 and renamed the "Star of India" in 1906. By 1923 steam power had replaced sails on merchant ships and the Star of India was laid up in Oakland. A group of San Diegans purchased the ship and had her towed to San Diego in 1927. Depression and war delayed the beginning of her restoration until the late 1950s. In 1976, with her restoration complete, she sailed on San Diego bay for the first time in 50 years. The Star of India is now the pride of the Maritime Museum of San Diego's fleet of historic ships.

Kaipara Lighthouse in Pouto (built 1884), one of the oldest lighthouses in New Zealand. Northland, North Island. ^^^It is located on the last outcrop of sandstone, 278 feet above sea level. The Kaipara harbour, its infamous mouth and sandbar and the coast nearby were very treacherous. An area of Pouto is called the Graveyard because of the 150 ships which went down there between 1840 and 1940. In certain tidal and sand conditions the remains of wrecks may be partially exposed offshore or in the sand. The lighthouse was erected in 1884 by Mr D Scott and first operated on 1st December 1884. A three storey wooden lighthouse, it was built with kauri timber. The cost of building the lighthouse was 5571 pounds. It was automated on 17th November, 1947, on the day the harbour was closed to ships.

He won the race by being the first person to complete a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the world. In fact he was the only competitor in the race to finish. He arrived back in Falmouth on Tuesday April 22, 1969, taking 313 days for the circumnavigation. Robin Knox-Johnston built Suhaili in the Colaba Workshops in Bombay, India and launched her on September 19th,1964. Nat Herreshoff revolutionized yacht design with Gloriana and under the ownership of Edwin D. Morgan, Vice-commodore of the New York Yacht Club, she won all of her eight races in the summer of 1891 in the newly established 46 foot (waterline) class. She was 71 feet overall, 13 feet beam and 46 feet on the waterline. At the end of the 1891 season, Gloriana was sold to W. B Hopkins of Philadelphia. During the 1892 season, although still one of the fastest in her class, Gloriana was beaten by Wasp, a new Nat Herreshoff design.

"Viking leads the First Class yachts in the Auckland Anniversary Regatta of 1894." Oil on canvas, 24" x 35", 2002. Private collection. Copyright © 2002. A.D Blake. All rights reserved. "Viking" is shown, shortly after the start, leading "Muritai" (to leeward) and "Volunteer" (astern) in the First Class Race which, that year, was for the 'Championship of the Colony'. In a hard fought race that was written and talked about for many years, Viking won by two minutes over Volunteer. In the painting the crew of Muritai are having trouble 'breaking out' the top of their spinnaker. ^^^Volunteer was late crossing the starting line and is following Viking down the harbour. A trading cutter, in cloud shadow on the left hand side, beats up the harbour together with a smaller racing yacht (astern of Volunteer). A fresh westerly is blowing and clouds cast shadows across the foreground water and background land. The paddle wheel ferry Victoria followed the First Class yachts carrying a crowd of sightseers. The Viking was designed by the famous New Zealand designer Charles Bailey Jnr, built at the yard of Charles Bailey Snr and was launched on 23 December 1893. She was built for the wealthy Bloomfield brothers, Jack, Harry and Ernest and for more than 40 years was the largest yacht in New Zealand. Viking is presently owned by Admiral Sir Gordon Tait of Auckland and is now rigged as a ketch. Volunteer, a 65 foot cutter, was built in Sydney, Australia, in 1888 and designed by the eccentric Scotsman Reeks. He declared that she should challenge for the America's Cup but she was too small of course. She was bought by Tom Henderson and sailed to Auckland in 1893. His hopes of dominating the First Class fleet were dashed with the launching of the Viking. Muritai was a 54 foot cutter designed and built in 1882 by another of New Zealand's renowned designers, Robert Logan.

"Moonlight arrival at Nantucket,1886. The schooner Fortuna, Commodore Henry S. Hovey, rounds Brandt Point." Oil on canvas, 36" x 48", 2000. Private collection. Copyright © 2000. A.D Blake. All rights reserved. The large 109ft schooner "Fortuna" ghosts into Nantucket under 'all sails' in calm moonlit conditions. A few 'catspaws' of wind ruffle the water on the right hand side while the outgoing tide around Brandt Point creates swirls in the water's surface on the left hand side. The local catboat "Lillian" rounds Brandt Point just ahead of Fortuna. Both are followed by a sailing dory, a typical means of island transport in the late 1800's. In the right hand background the lights of the Nantucket Hotel (built 1884 and removed 1905) reflect in the calm water. Behind the bowsprit of Fortuna is the Brandt Point lighthouse, nowadays a part of the Coastguard station. ^^^In the harbour, a three-master 'makes sail', but will have to wait for more breeze before she can leave. The steamer "Island Home", alongside Steamboat Wharf, is making steam in preparation for departure. Fortuna was built for Henry Hovey in 1883 and was his 'flagship' when he served as the Commodore of the Eastern yacht Club from 1884 to 1886. Due to his unprecedented popularity, he was again elected Commodore in 1899 (still with Fortuna) and was the first Commodore to die in office in 1900.

Eleven yachts entered the "Emperor's Cup" transatlantic race of 1905. ^^^They ranged in size from the 108 ft schooner Fleur de Lys to the 245ft full rigged Valhalla. Atlantic took a mid northern great circle course from Sandy Hook to the Lizard of the English Channel, meeting icebergs on the way. Skippered by the professional Charlie Barr, Atlantic created a record of 12 days 4 hours one minute and 19 seconds which was to stand until broken in August 1980 by the foiler/trimaran Cote d'Or skippered by Eric Tabarly. From the noon to noon, beginning on May 23rd, Atlantic covered 341 nautical miles at an average of 14,2 knots. For the race she carried a square sail which was flown from the foremast, when the wind was well aft of the beam, as shown in the painting.

Her mainsail is the 'old fashioned' vertical cut whereas both Ilex and Rawene have the new cross cut mainsails. Viking had a close tussle with Ilex but finished second behind the Logan designed Iorangi, who led from start to finish. Rawene passed Ilex just before the finish to come third. It is early in the morning just prior to sunrise, with the full moon casting a glow on Nantucket town and harbor. The large schooner "Mayflower" is making her way out of the harbour and around the new Brandt Point lighthouse. In the foreground, a small sailing dory heads into the harbour. ^^^The speed of the Mayflower, in the favorable breeze, will ensure she crosses ahead of the dory. The paddlewheel steamer Nantucket can be seen alonside the end of Steamboat Wharf. Coastal trading schooners and local catboats are anchored off the town. The tide has started to ebb around Brandt Point causing swirls on the waters and around the piles of the lighthouse. The Mayflower, designed by Edward Burgess and launched in 1886, successfully defended the America's Cup in 1886 against the British challenger Galatea. Mayflower was launched as a cutter and later changed to schooner rig, as shown in the painting. A.D Blake. All rights reserved. ^^^ Having finished the Eastern Yacht Club's Regatta in fourth place in her class, America is shown entering Marblehead late in the afternoon. Just astern of America is the Mayflower, the successful America's Cup defender of 1886, closely followed by the Clara. Over by the point is the small Hilda, whose crew have been out watching the day's racing. A large banner has been hoisted to America's mainmast which some New York yachting journalists of the day referred to her as being dressed up "like an East River excursion barge". The increased attention would have delighted General Butler, a person who never shied from controversy. America is shown in her new rig configuration, as designed by Edward Burgess in 1885, and with white topsides, changed from the black at the beginning of the 1887 season. A cloud shadow darkens the foreground water and contrasts with the bright reflection, off the water, of America's sails. A cormorant, sitting on a floating log, watches the America pass.

The large black 136 foot schooner "Constellation" (Frank Skinner) of the Eastern Yacht Club, is shown leading the fleets of the Eastern and New York Yacht Clubs out of Marblehead Harbor on the morning of August 11, 1902, for the day's racing. On Constellation's port side is the Eastern Yacht Club's Flagship, the 212 foot steamer "Pantooset" (Commodore Bigelow). Crossing astern of Constellation is the 124 foot Flagship of the New York Yacht Club, "Corona" (Commodore Lewis Cass Ledyard). ^^^Following astern of Corona is the 106 foot New York Seventy Rainbow, with other yachts of the combined fleets following astern. The paddle wheel steamer Gay Head was chartered for the day by the yacht clubs to take members out to watch the days racing. She is shown on the left hand side of the painting. A narrow fairway, marked by blue flagged buoys on the east side and red on the west side of the harbor, was required to allow movement of the 1000 strong fleet within Marblehead Harbor. The day started out beautifully fine, but clouds started to move in, as shown in the painting, and later on there were sudden downpours of rain. Yachts not taking part in the regatta have 'dressed ship' (flown flags from bow to stern and up to the mastheads) in celebration. Clouds cast shadows on some of the land in the background and create interesting patterns on the foreground water.

Britannia was designed by George Watson, Vigilant by Nathanael G. Herreshoff and Calluna by William Fife Jnr. Britannia sailed under the ownership of Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) ^^^won more races than Vigilant in the 1894 season, however all races were very closely contested. Vigilant successfully defended the America's Cup against Valkyrie II in 1893.

"Britannia", with all canvas set, races up the Solent towards Cowes. Following close astern is the American yacht "Navahoe", "Satanita" on Navahoe windward quarter and "Iverna" astern in the distance. To windward of Britannia, a Thames barge can be seen, well loaded down, sailing to windward. Built by Henderson's on the Clyde in 1893 and designed by George L. Watson for the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), "Britannia" had an extremely successful career spanning over 40 years. Out of 635 races she won 231 firsts out of a total of 360 prizes. She had an overall length of 121 ft 6 inches, waterline length of 87 ft 9 inches and a beam of 23 ft 4 inches. Navahoe, shown following second behind Britannia, was designed by Nathanael Herreshoff and also built in 1893. She arrived in England from Rhode Island in time for Cowes Week 1893. She was also very successful winning 6 out 18 starts during the 1893 season.

"Puritan" was designed by Edward Burgess and built for a Boston syndicate led by J. Malcolm Forbes and General Charles J. Paine. "Genesta" was designed by the Irish designer J. Beavor-Webb and owned by Sir Richard Sutton, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron. ^^^In a course consisting of a 20 mile run to leeward followed by a 20 mile beat back to windward the "Genesta" led by more than two minutes at the leeward mark. Both yachts had jack topsails up for the run. Puritan took down her topsail and housed her topmast for the beat back to the finish, whereas "Genesta" replaced her jack topsail with a working topsail. In winds gusting in excess of 30 knots on the beat, the "Genesta" was overcanvassed and her sails flogged at times in the gusts. In the painting "Puritan" can be seen passing "Genesta" to windward. There was a short steep sea running and both yachts were sending the spray flying. Most of the crews are positioned along the windward rail. To windward of "Puritan" is a chartered tug with members of the New York Yacht Club aboard and other spectator yachts. "Puritan" went on to win the race and thus successfully defended the America's Cup.

Ranger is shown racing past the Gay Head Lighthouse on her way up Vineyard Sound after rounding the Vineyard Sound Lightship. There was a fresh 25 knot breeze and large seas. Harold Vanderbilt, the owner and skipper of Ranger remarked in his book "On the Wind's Highway" that he had not often seen bigger seas in the Vineyard Sound than on that race to Edgartown. The sun's reflection is sparkling off the water and clouds cast shadows on the background land and on the Endeavour II. Following close behind Endeavour II is the Race Committee boat for the America's Cup Wilhelmina. She was also the Race Committee boat, which Ranger won convincingly sailing against Endeavour II, two weeks before. At Ranger's wheel is Harold Vanderbilt with Gertrude Vanderbilt close alongside.

Columbia was the third successfull America's Cup defender designed by the famous Nathanael Herreshoff. She was 131 ft long, 24 ft beam and carried 13,335 sq.ft. of sail. Shamrock I was designed by William Fife Jr. She was 137 ft long, 24 ft beam and carried 14,027 sq.ft. of sail. She was the first of five Shamrocks designed and built for Sir Thomas Lipton in his unsuccessful quest for the America's Cup. Here, both yachts have just taken in their spinnakers ^^^as they reach up to the leeward mark. There is a scramble on the foredecks of both yachts as the crews fight the spinnakers into submission in the fresh breeze. Columbia, starting a minute after Shamrock I (there being a two minute 'window' in which each yacht could choose to start) passed her just prior to rounding the leeward mark and went on to win by 6 minutes 34 seconds, on corrected time. In the background can be seen the black steamyacht Corsair, owned by the commodore of the New York Yacht Club, J. Pierpont Morgan. The white steamyacht behind Corsair bow is the Sir Thomas Lipton's (the owner of Shamrock) Erin.

One of the most exciting races in America's Cup history was sailed on a very fresh day, October 13th 1893, between the American defender "Vigilant", a Nathanael Herreshoff designed and built (by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co.) and the British challenger "Valkyrie II". In the painting Vigilant and Valkyrie II are both shown with reefs in their mainsails as they start on the 'thrash' to the windward mark. The spray is flying as they plunge into and over the seas. Starting off the Sandy Hook Lightship (right hand background) ^^^Valkyrie II (to windward of Vigilant) led by 2 minutes after the 15 mile beat to the windward mark. On the run back to the finish, Vigilant shook out the reef in her mainsail, put up a club topsail and spinnaker and managed to pass and beat Valkyrie II by 40 seconds on corrected time after Valkyrie II blew her spinnaker to pieces in the 30 knot wind.

Jubilee, built in 1893 for General Paine together with Colonia, built at Herreshoff's for a syndicate consisting of Archibald Rogers, J. Pierpont Morgan and J.E Brooks and Pilgrim, also built for a syndicate, were all contenders for the defence of the America's Cup in 1893. All three boats were approximately 124' long and 85' on the waterline. (Vigilant, also designed and built by Herreshoff's, was the successful defender). ^^^The painting depicts a race, held by the Eastern Yacht Club, with Jubilee leading Colonia, in cloud shadow, and Pilgrim around the markboat. The sun is low in the sky but in the fresh breeze Jubilee is carrying too much sail and her mainsail is luffing as she climbs over the swell. The crew on Colonia are still struggling on the foredeck trying to bundle the spinnaker down below. Pilgrim has left her spinnaker up too long and it is doubtful wether they will be able to get it down before rounding the markboat. Other yachts of the Eastern Yacht Club fleet follow behind, under cloud shadow.

In the painting "Resolute" has just managed to cross ahead of "Shamrock IV" and take the lead. The crew of Shamrock IV are poised ready to tack onto port, should Resolute now tack on to starboard. Resolute was the last America's Cup defender designed by the great Nathanael G. Herreshoff. Shamrock IV was designed by Charles E. Nicholson and was an unusual 'scow' type of design with considerable 'tumblehome' in the topsides. On the left hand side of the painting is "Commodore J". Pierpont Morgan's 304 feet Corsair "III". Directly behind Corsair III is Sir Thomas Lipton's "Erin". ^^^Shamrock IV was the Sir Thomas Lipton's fourth challenge for the America's Cup. His fifth and final challenge was with Shamrock V in 1930. This America's Cup of 1920 was also the last to be sailed with gaff rigged yachts. As the wind freshened during the third race, a windward-leeward course of 30 miles, Resolute came from behind to pass Shamrock IV and led by nearly 2 minutes at the windward mark.

The third and final race for the America's Cup of 1899 ^^^was a 15 mile leg to leeward followed by a return to windward to finish off the Sandy Hook Lightship. In the painting Columbia has just passed Shamrock in the fresh following breeze. Both yachts flew spinnakers on this downwind leg and Columbia has just taken in her topsail (furled against the topmast). Shamrock's crew are still clearing the spinnaker from the foredeck. In the beat back to the finish Shamrock continued to fall further behind Columbia finally finishing 6 minutes after Columbia. Columbia was designed by Nathanael Herreshoff and built at the Herreshoff's yard in Bristol, Rhode Island. Shamrock was designed by William Fife Jr. and built by Thornycroft at Woolston, near Southampton. Shamrock was the first of five yachts with which Sir Thomas Lipton challenged for the America's Cup. Columbia was owned by a New York Yacht Club syndicate headed by C. Oliver Iselin. Columbia successfully defended the America's Cup for a second time in 1901 against Lipton's Shamrock II.

Volunteer won this race by over nineteen minutes. She also won the second race by twelve minutes and thus the America's Cup. Volunteer was designed by Edward Burgess and was 106,5 ft long, 20,25 ft beam and carried 8,968 sq. ft. of sail.

Three severe lows were scheduled for the race. For everybody, Loic Caradec was taking enormous risks with his life in sailing this huge craft alone. Rapidly, the sleepless skipper was totally exhausted. Pilots were useless naturally and Loic was obliged to steer day and night. The Argos beacon stopped its signals on November 14. Florence Arthaud later discovered the giant capsized with nobody aboard. Loic was a man of wonderful character, full of humour and a great sailor. His loss was a heavy tribute paid to the sponsor's glory. He should have been prevented from starting in these conditions.
