German/Australian marine and nature photographer, Jürgen Freund trained as an engineer but soon realised that this was not the career he wanted. His engineering skills helped him to create special lenses and underwater gadgets making his photography innovative and unique. His photographs are used extensively by conservation agencies like WWF & Conservation International and he has authored several WWF coffee table books namely The Coral Triangle and the Sulu Sulawesi Seas. He lived for many years in the Philippines and documented issues around whale shark hunting, leading to the eventual protection of the species. In 2003 he emigrated with his wife Stella to Far North Queensland, Australia, and considers the entire Australian continent as his photographic studio.
