British gardens are a vital habitat for birds, and many species depend on birdfeeders to sustain their populations during the cold winter months. Some once common garden birds, such as house sparrows, starlings and song thrushes, have shown worrying and unexplained declines in recent years.

Gullls have had a bad press in the summer of 2015, due to the increasing numbers breeding in towns and citties and to their perceived aggression as scavengers and reported attacks on domestic pets. Here we show the diversity of British gulls, from the urban herring and lesser black-backed gulls to the more maritime, cliff-nesting kittiwake.

The white stork is widely distributed as a breeding bird in Europe, migrating south to winter in Africa. Its populations have been declining due to habitat loss and changes in agricultural methods, but in recent years it has been the subject of successful reintroduction programmes in a number of countries, most recently the UK.
