One of the most misunderstood birds of prey, vultures, through feeding on carrion, provide humanity with an immeasurable service. SCF’s teams in Niger and Chad monitor six species of vulture to assess threats to these declining populations. In fact, all six are priority species for conservation. The gallery below shows the six species of vulture which nest in Niger. Of these, four are critically endangered and the other two endangered. Egyptian vultures complete impressive migrations from Europe to overwinter in West and Central Africa.

A complex web of threats endangers the survival of Africa’s vultures. Accidental poisoning and use for medicine and rituals are the two most significant ones. SCR found in conversations with local communities that the use of vulture body parts in traditional medicine posed the greatest threat to their survival. As a result, SCF initiated an awareness campaign to explain the importance of these majestic birds to local population. This especially targeted traditional medical practitioners to reduce this threat.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="240" src="https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-360x240.jpg" class="attachment-three-two size-three-two" alt="" srcset="https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-360x240.jpg 360w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-150x100.jpg 150w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-300x201.jpg 300w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-768x514.jpg 768w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922.jpg 1024w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-600x401.jpg 600w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-510x340.jpg 510w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-320x214.jpg 320w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-375x251.jpg 375w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-900x602.jpg 900w, https://www.naturepl.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/naturepl_01406922-158x106.jpg 158w" sizes="100vw" title="Animal amulets for sale in Sandaga market, one of the most important in Dakar.
