Millions of Sockeye salmon swim up the Okhotsk Sea every year to Kurile Lake to spawn and die. This attracts hundreds of Brown bears which feed on them to build up fat reserves as winter approaches.

Lake Baikal in Siberia is the largest, longest, deepest and oldest lake in the world, comprising about one fifth of the freshwater on the planet. Most of the species of animals and plants that live in the lake, such as freshwater sponges, are endemic. The limestone coast of South Australia is characterised by abyssal karst springs, sinkholes and crater lakes. Some springs flow into the sea, either as submarine wells or on sandy beaches in intertidal areas.

The Te Waikoropupu Springs are sacred to the Maori and no-one is allowed to touch or drink their water. The high atlitude Lake Rotomairwhenua is also sacred to the Maori, who traditionally used its clear waters to wash the bodies of the dead.
