Introducing the Freshwater Project

Meltwater pool on icecap, Greenland Water soldier and water lily, Danube Delta, Romania

Michel Roggo launched his Freshwater Project in 2010, aiming to photograph the world’s varied aquatic environments and to focus attention on our threatened but vital freshwater ecosystems. We’ve created a gallery section devoted to this inspiring project, including Highlights from all 40 destinations and a section on the Polar Regions. The European sites featured by the Freshwater Project include the Danube Delta in Romania, Plitvice in Croatia, Thingvellir in Iceland, the River Itchen in England and the Swiss glaciers which form the “watertower of Europe”.

Asia & Australasia

Michel explores Africa’s unique freshwater sites - the Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls and Lake Malawi with its unique endemic fish – as well as the life-sustaining wadis of the Arabian Peninsula. The American wetlands and ecosystems feature the Pantanal, Iguazu Falls and the Anhumas Abyss in Brazil, Mexico’s Quintana Roo, the Floridian Aquifer and Canada’s salmon rivers and Rocky Mountain lakes. Asia’s aquatic ecosystems feature Lake Baikal, the travertine landscapes of Jiuzhaigou, China and the Gunung Mulu caves, Borneo. Michel also reveals the crater lakes and intertidal springs of Australia’s limestone coast  and New Zealand’s sacred sites.
