MARCH 2023

They say March “comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” so this month we’re taking inspiration from the old proverb by opening our March newsletter with this dramatic scene of a lioness chasing pelicans, captured by National Geographic photographer Charlie Hamilton-James (more of his work later). The image is one of many added to our collection over the last month - you can discover more in our February Highlights gallery.

MAD MARCH HARES

You've heard the phrase "Mad as a march hare" but do you know where it comes from? March falls in the middle of the hares' breeding season, when they can be seen chasing each other and engaging in frantic boxing matches. This seemingly madcap behaviour is actually females fending off unwanted attention from amorous males. See what that looks like in this month’s clip.

AND FINALLY...

We came in like a lion so it only makes sense that we go out like a lamb! If you appreciate the image below, there'll be plenty more like it next month. In the meantime, we wish you a bright and happy start to spring!
